Kwilu Bar occupied 3, Avenue De La Justice in the commune of Gombe, at the heart of Kinshasa. It was the city's first upscale open-air venue — a terrace beneath the trees, a well-tuned sound system, and a cocktail menu that stood apart from the standard offerings of Kinshasa's bars.
What it was
The bar built its reputation on two things: its cocktails made with Kwilu, the national Congolese rum (Woman in Love, Nyiragongo, Boss des boss, Cœur d'Afrique), and its musical atmosphere — tropical jazz, afro-reggae, latin zouk. An unusual spot for Kinshasa, it drew expatriates and upscale Kinois alike.
