The Games aim to promote peace and development through encounters between young francophone people, encourage cultural exchange, support artistic talent and help athletes progress toward major international competitions. The Games are held every four years, alternating between countries of the Global North and South.
The 9th edition was held in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, from 28 July to 6 August 2023. It brought together 3,000 young athletes and artists from around thirty countries. The opening ceremony at the Stade des Martyrs drew 80,000 spectators. It was the first major international competition ever organised by the DRC.
