The Ex-Sozacom building stands on Boulevard du 30 Juin, in the heart of Kinshasa, facing the SCPT building. It is one of the most imposing and recognizable structures in the Congolese capital.
Commissioned by President Mobutu as part of his vision to make Kinshasa an international commercial hub, the building was intended to house the offices of the Société Générale des Minerais — later renamed Gécamines. The upper floors also served as residential apartments.
Construction took eight years, from 1969 to 1977, carried out by a Belgian architecture firm based in Genval. The tower is defined by a sculpted facade with projecting volumes, sharp edges and openings integrated into its bold forms. This daring architectural language makes it an unmissable urban landmark in central Kinshasa.
Today, the Ex-Sozacom remains a symbol of the architectural ambition of the Mobutu era and a point of reference for any visitor making their way along Boulevard du 30 Juin.
