N'Djili international airport, IATA code FIH and ICAO code FZAA, is Kinshasa's only international air gateway and one of the busiest airports in Central Africa. Located in the N'Sele commune, about 25 km from the city center (Gombe), it's the mandatory passage point for every traveler arriving in or leaving the DRC's capital, whether for business, with family, or after years spent abroad.
N'Djili at a glance
The airport has one main terminal for international and regional flights, about 45 minutes to 1h30 from Gombe depending on traffic. The route mainly runs along Boulevard Lumumba. There's no train or dedicated bus linking the airport to downtown: getting there means a car, either a driver booked in advance or a taxi negotiated on the spot.

Arriving at N'Djili: what to expect
Passport control can take a while, and the baggage carousel gives no reliable flight information. At the hall exit, unofficial intermediaries routinely offer their services: the best response is to decline politely and wait for a confirmed contact. To skip this step entirely, an airport assistance service with a dedicated agent takes charge of the passenger right off the plane, through baggage claim and to the waiting vehicle.
Leaving N'Djili: departure formalities
For an international flight, plan for at least 3 hours before takeoff. An airport development tax (IDEF) of 55 USD is due before check-in, payable at the counters in the hall. Passport, ticket and IDEF receipt are needed at every step, and baggage searches are systematic.
Getting into Kinshasa from the airport
A transfer booked in advance removes all negotiation on arrival: an identified driver, a price fixed before departure, and a direct ride to the destination. Good to know
Wifi is limited at the airport: it's worth downloading any documents needed beforehand. Local currency (CDF) or dollars can be bought before leaving the hall, or at an approved exchange counter on site. Any amount over 10,000 USD must be declared both entering and leaving the country.
