Mbanza-Ngungu Caves (Finzolua), natural site in Kongo Central, DRC

The Mbanza-Ngungu caves form a network of natural tunnels discovered in 1915 by Belgian colonel Tordeur. They are located approximately 5 km southeast of the town of Mbanza-Ngungu, in the village of Mbamba-Ntoto, province of Kongo Central — about 150 km from Kinshasa.

Three caves, only one accessible

Three caves have been documented: Lukatu, Finzolua Ndombolozi and Ngovo. Only Finzolua Ndombolozi is open to visitors today. The other two are classified as protected scientific reserves. A 6 m × 4 m platform, built during the colonial period, is still visible at the entrance to Finzolua.

The blind fish — a species unique in the world

The cave is home to a species of blind fish found nowhere else on the planet. Eyeless, measuring about 10 cm, this fish can live up to 15 years in total darkness. It has adapted over millennia to the complete absence of light. No visitor has ever made it through the entire cave — its underground extent remains unknown.

Planning your visit

Access has been made difficult in recent years by landslides and erosion. A torch is mandatory; closed-toe shoes with non-slip soles are advised. The ground is wet and slippery. It is recommended to come with a local guide from Mbanza-Ngungu who knows the current condition of the access path.

How to get there from Kinshasa

Mbanza-Ngungu is about 150 km from Kinshasa, around 3 to 5 hours by road via Route Nationale 1 depending on traffic. A vehicle with driver is the only viable option — no direct public transport serves the cave site. Combine with the Kisantu Botanical Garden (30 km along the same road) for a full weekend in Kongo Central.
