DRC travel guide
Choose and book your transport
Getting around the DRC requires serious preparation. Road infrastructure is variable, distances are vast and transport options differ by region. Here is what to know before you move.
Road transport
Road infrastructure is poor outside main corridors. Public transport and local taxis are not recommended for unacquainted visitors. Renting a car with driver remains the best option for getting around Kinshasa and its surroundings.
- Outside major cities, 4×4 vehicles are essential.
- Travelling in a convoy of at least two vehicles is recommended in rural areas.
- Avoid night driving on roads.
- Certain strategic areas (mining zones, border areas) require prior authorisation.
River transport
Boat travel is possible on the Congo River and its tributaries, but not advised without serious safety guarantees about the vessel. Capsizing incidents occur regularly.
- Kinshasa — Brazzaville: Daily fast-boat service (20 minutes). The border closes on Sundays at noon.
- Kivu: Goma — Bukavu crossing takes 2 to 7 hours depending on the operator. Security threats have targeted this route in the past.
- The Kinshasa — Kisangani river link is not advised.
Air transport
This is the safest and most efficient mode of transport for long distances. Kinshasa (Ndjili airport) is served by several international airlines.
- Europe: Brussels Airlines (Brussels), Air France (Paris), Turkish Airlines (Istanbul)
- Africa: Ethiopian Airlines (Addis Ababa), Kenya Airways (Nairobi), South African Airways (Johannesburg)
- Domestic flights: CAA, Korongo Airlines and other carriers serve Lubumbashi, Goma, Kisangani, Mbuji-Mayi
Transport in Kinshasa
For getting around the city, Kino Congo offers airport transfers and car hire with driver (Toyota Alphard, 7 seats). This is the most comfortable and reliable option for travel in Kinshasa.
