DRC travel guide
Pack your bags
Packing well avoids costly oversights and emergency purchases on the ground. Here is what to bring for a successful trip to the DRC — whether you are travelling with a carry-on or a large holdall.
Clothing
Kinshasa is a tropical city (25–35°C year-round). Go for light, breathable fabrics. Bring a light jacket for air-conditioned restaurants and hotels. For nature excursions, long clothing protects against insects.
- Light outfits (cotton or linen)
- A light jacket or gilet
- Comfortable shoes for walking around the city
- Closed shoes for excursions
- Hat or cap
Hygiene and personal care
Basic products are available in Kinshasa, but often more expensive than in Europe. Bring your usual brands, especially for specific items (high-SPF sunscreen, suitable hair products, etc.).
Health
A basic medical kit is essential. Pack:
- Antimalarials (prescribed by your doctor before departure)
- Mosquito repellent (DEET or picaridin, high concentration)
- Oral rehydration salts in case of diarrhoea
- Painkillers and antipyretics (paracetamol, ibuprofen)
- Plasters and antiseptic
- Your usual medication in sufficient quantity
Money
The US dollar is the de facto currency in the DRC for major transactions. The Congolese franc (CDF) is used for small everyday purchases.
- Bring clean, recent-issue notes (post-2009 for USD).
- Worn, creased or old notes are often refused.
- Bank cards are only accepted at certain large hotels, restaurants and supermarkets.
- Bring enough cash for the first few days.
Essential documents
- Passport (valid for at least 6 months)
- DRC visa
- International vaccination booklet (yellow fever compulsory)
- Travel insurance certificate
- Digital copies of all your documents (stored online)
